Age Friendly Berkshires

To create a more livable Berkshire County for people of all ages, with a focus on the needs of an aging population.

Becoming Age Friendly Berkshires

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2030, over 50% of Berkshire County residents will be age 50 or older.  With a median age of 44, Berkshire County is older than the rest of Massachusetts (median age of 39) and the U.S. (median age 36).  Our collaborative was created to ensure that our residents can live active, safe, healthy and independent lives in their homes or hometowns, for as long as possible.

HERE’S HOW WE ARE Becoming Age Friendly Berkshires

Successfully managing the changing needs of residents over a lifetime is always challenging – but more so in a rural area like ours. The region lacks accessible transportation and housing variety, requires longer travel to access health and community services or attractions, and lags in technological infrastructure that makes communication and information-sharing easy.

The size and diversity of the county demands a more coordinated, cost-effective approach for product and service delivery to residents, that keeps pace with advances in technology, health and lifestyle choices.  The challenges will require collaboration and fundamental change — on the part of our governments, institutions, non-profits, businesses and citizens.

Our Age Friendly Berkshires Action Plan provides a blueprint for our 32 cities and towns for a more “age-friendly” future  for all.  Over the coming years, all our efforts will focus on improving regional assets, programs and resources to find innovative solutions to improve all aspects of community life.

Age Friendly Berkshires Action Plan

Age Friendly Berkshires was the first Massachusetts community to join the AARP Network of Age Friendly States and Communities in June, 2015.  Since that time, AFB has received generous support via two, two-year grants from the Tufts Health Plan Foundation, to develop and help implement the Age Friendly Berkshires Action Plan, detailed here.
